Protecting Clean Water and Preserving our Environment
At just under 10 acres with over 1,000 feet of Lake Monona shoreline, San Damiano’s conservation is critical for ensuring clean lakes. It has remained largely undisturbed for more than 100 years. When it came on to the market in 2019, I heard from constituents all across the district that they would like it to be protected from private development.
I made it a priority to preserve the San Damiano property and delivered on that promise in my first County budget. I authored an amendment to the 2020-2021 that added $2 million to support the City of Monona’s purchase of the property and again authored a resolution to authorize the purchase in 2021.
2021 RES-014 | AUTHORIZING THE PURCHASE OF SAN DAMIANO FRIARY IN CITY OF MONONA
2020 EANR C-01 | ENVIRONMENT, AGRICULTURE & NATURAL RESOURCES (EANR) COMMITTEE OPERATING & CAPITAL BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OCTOBER 27, 2020
By securing the County funding, the City of Monona was able to complete the purchase of San Damiano. The Clean Lakes Alliance recognized this project with the 2020 Urban Project of the Year award.
Conserving San Damiano
Clean Lakes & water quality
Clean water is critical for life. It is paramount that we preserve the quality of drinking and navigable water in Dane County. I have cosponsored several resolutions focused on issues like PFAs mitigation, farmland preservation, and more:
2021 RES-125: PROVIDING PUBLIC INFORMATION ABOUT PFAS AND AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
2021 RES-124: ACCEPTING FARMLAND PRESERVATION PLAN GRANT
2021 RES-306: ACCEPTANCE OF A STATE OF WI DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES LAKE MONITORING & PROTECTION GRANT
2021 RES-292: AUTHORIZING ACCEPTANCE OF 2022 DATCP GRANT AWARD TO UW-EXTENSION FOR PRODUCER-LED WATERSHED PROTECTION GRANT
Sustainable practices
Dane County is a leader on issues of sustainability and renewable energy, but I know that we can do more. I have served on Monona’s Sustainability Committee for several years and I know how important this issue is to our neighbors. I will continue to support the expansion of renewable energy, energy efficiency programs, and innovative partnerships to expand other sustainable practices across Dane County.
